Stable Gate residents Max and Linda Richey went from oil and gas to fast casual restaurant owners. Although a big change, the Richeys are thoroughly enjoying this new venture. And the food? "It's really good. It's all fresh. it's hot and tasty. You have a lot of choices, and you can customize exactly what you want took," Maxi said.
Max and Linda were both born into the oil and gas industry. Although Max was born in Louisiana, he lived in Libya, Singapore, and London. After graduating high school, he attended Texas A&M in College Station and followed in his father's footsteps. Most of his career was spent in the oil field, although he did manage restaurants in the 1980s during the oil crisis. These were full-service, free-standing buildings with big menus and a huge staff. Once the crisis was over, it was back to oil and gas, with the last stop being in Malaysia as the Vice President of Asia.
During the pandemic, the price of oil crashed, and many were laid off. Both Max and Linda left the company after 25 years. A year into playing golf, Linda prompted Max to find something to do. Over the last ten years, he had seen places like PeiWei and Smash Burger pop up and thought if he ever did a restaurant again, it would be "fast casual". Something that was fresh, made to order, with a smaller footprint. While in Conroe, he rain into a Teriyaki Madness and loved the food. Earlier in life, while working and traveling in the Pacific Northwest, he loved the Seattle-style teriyaki but had never found something like it in Houston.
The two investigated the franchise and they liked the concept and the people. They spoke to other franchisee owners, who encouraged them to take the leap. The store opened on 1/24/23. Teriyaki Madness is located at 14119 Grand Road, in a strip center near H-E-B.
"I've had a great time meeting all the people from the community that come in to eat or come to get takeout," Max said. "We also have a great staff. We're a real team and always pull together and that makes it fun."
In its first year of business, the store received the highest overall ratings over all the other franchises in the US, of which there are 140. The average rating for a franchise is 4.0 across Google, Yelp, DoorDash and Easy Cater. The Richey's store has a 4.7 rating, and the chain uses their store when trying to sell additional franchises. Since opening, the store has set multiple weekly records.
Max claims they have the best noodles and fried rice in town. Everything is made to order. Nothing is pre-made, and the food goes right from the wok into your bowl. Every bowl is customizable as well. In addition to dining in or takeout, the restaurant also caters. They have done 405 catering orders since opening. All 102 reviews have received 5 stars. They personally deliver and set up the food to ensure everything is correct. The store recently catered an event for the Cy Woods Band for a total of 350 orders.
The Richeys enjoy supporting and getting involved in the community. They have sponsored the Cy-Fair High School boys basketball team two years in a row. They are also sponsoring the Cy-Fair Varsity baseball team and have catered multiple times to the baseball and softball teams, as well as are part of upcoming fundraising events for Cy-Fair High School Athletics. They have donated items to teacher appreciation weeks and donated gift cards to raffles to raise money for various causes.
The store is open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Every Sunday, kids 10 and under get a free junior bowl with the purchase of a regular or large bowl. You can have your food delivered by UberEats, DoorDash, GrubHub, or Favor.
Max said, "Come by and try it. Download the Mad Rewards app. Order for pickup or delivery and check out catering for any upcoming special events."
